What Is a Level 4 Diploma? Is It Equivalent to the First Year of a Degree, and What Can It Lead To?
A Level 4 diploma sits at the same level as the first year of a UK bachelor's degree. Learn what "Level 4" means, how it compares with an HNC and CertHE, how long it takes, and how it leads to Level 5 and a top-up degree.

A Level 4 diploma is a UK higher-education qualification that sits at the same level as the first year of a bachelor's degree. It is not a degree on its own, but it is the first rung of the higher-education ladder: finish a Level 4 diploma, and the usual next step is a Level 5 diploma, then a final-year top-up to a full bachelor's.
This guide explains what "Level 4" means, how a Level 4 diploma compares with an HNC, a CertHE and the first year of university, who it suits, how long it takes, and what it can lead to. If you already know Level 4 and want the next stage, read what a Level 5 diploma is.
What "Level 4" actually means
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, regulated qualifications are placed on a scale from Entry Level up to Level 8. The UK government's list of qualification levels groups qualifications by difficulty, so everything at the same level is of a broadly similar standard, even when the subject or size is different.
Level 4 is where higher education begins. The qualifications the government lists at this level include the Certificate of Higher Education (CertHE), the Higher National Certificate (HNC), higher apprenticeships, and Level 4 awards, certificates and diplomas. Level 3 is the stage below (A levels, Access to HE diplomas and Level 3 diplomas), and Level 5 is the stage above (HND, foundation degree, DipHE and Level 5 diplomas).
A simple way to picture it: Level 4 is year one of a degree, Level 5 is year two, and Level 6 is the final honours year.
Scotland uses its own framework, the SCQF. SCQF Level 7 is the Scottish equivalent of Level 4, which is why an EduQual Certificate in Business and Management at SCQF Level 7 is pitched at the same stage as a Level 4 diploma from an English awarding body.
Level 4 diploma vs HNC vs CertHE vs first year of university
These four qualifications all sit at Level 4, so people often ask which is "better". The honest answer is that they are different routes to the same stage. The table below shows how they usually compare.
| Qualification | Typical size | Who awards it | Usual next step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 4 diploma (for example, a Qualifi diploma) | Usually 120 credits | An Ofqual-regulated awarding organisation | Level 5 diploma, or entry to year two of a related degree at the receiving university's discretion |
| HNC (Higher National Certificate) | Usually 120 credits | Pearson (BTEC) or SQA in Scotland | HND, or year two of a related degree |
| CertHE (Certificate of Higher Education) | 120 credits | A university | Year two of the same or a related degree |
| First year of a bachelor's degree | 120 credits | A university | Year two of the same degree |
The main differences are practical rather than academic. A Level 4 diploma from an awarding organisation is usually assessed by assignments rather than exams, can often be started at any time rather than only in September, and is typically studied online while you keep working. A CertHE or a university first year normally ties you to one institution's calendar and campus.
One important detail: a Level 4 diploma is not a degree and does not claim to be one. Its value is as a recognised, regulated step that gets you into (or back into) higher education without committing to a full three-year programme up front. How a Level 4 diploma is structured: a worked example
The Qualifi Level 4 Diploma in Business Management is a good illustration. Qualifi's published specification sets it at 120 credits at Level 4, built from six mandatory units: Communications in Organisations, Leadership and the Organisation, Financial Awareness, Managing Change, Business Operations, and Developing Teams. At UeCampus, each unit is assessed by assignment rather than by exam, so there are no exam halls to travel to.
Qualifi's specification says learners are expected to progress to a Qualifi Level 5 qualification, and may alternatively enter the second year of an undergraduate business degree or move into a related profession. At UeCampus, this diploma is delivered fully online over around eight months, and the natural next step is the Qualifi Level 5 Extended Diploma in Business Management, a 240-credit programme that covers the equivalent of years one and two and is designed to lead on to a final-year top-up.
Is a Level 4 diploma equivalent to a degree?
No. A Level 4 diploma is equivalent in level to the first year of a bachelor's degree, not to the whole degree. A full honours degree is a Level 6 qualification, normally 360 credits across three stages. A Level 4 diploma covers the first 120 of those.
What a Level 4 diploma can do is give you a recognised, regulated starting point. From there, the usual route is:
- Level 4 diploma (120 credits) — equivalent in level to year one.
- Level 5 diploma (a further 120 credits) — equivalent in level to year two.
- Level 6 top-up (the final 120 credits) — completes a full bachelor's degree.
Whether a university will accept your diploma credits for advanced entry is always the receiving university's decision. Universities make this decision case by case through their recognition of prior learning or credit transfer process, so ask before you enrol rather than assuming. Our explainer on what a top-up degree is walks through how the final stage works.
Who a Level 4 diploma suits
A Level 4 diploma is a sensible choice if any of these describe you:
- You finished school at Level 3 (A levels, a Level 3 diploma or equivalent) and want a lower-risk way into higher education. A Level 4 diploma lets you try degree-level study one stage at a time.
- You are working and cannot stop to attend a campus. Assignment-based, fully online delivery fits around a job far more easily than a timetabled first year.
- You are changing career and need a recognised foundation in a new field such as IT, cyber security, accounting, psychology or hospitality, before committing to years of study.
- You have work experience but no formal higher-level qualification. Many Level 4 diplomas accept relevant experience as an alternative to Level 3 grades; Qualifi's business management specification, for example, allows entry for learners who have held an organisational role and shown the capability to develop.
- You want to progress in stages. Each stage gives you a qualification in its own right, so if life gets in the way after Level 4 you still have something recognised to show for it.
If you are not yet at Level 3, a Qualifi Level 3 Diploma in Business Management is the stage before Level 4 and is designed to prepare you for it.
How long does a Level 4 diploma take?
A 120-credit Level 4 diploma is roughly one academic year of full-time study. Online, assignment-based delivery is usually faster or more flexible: UeCampus Level 4 diplomas are typically planned over about eight months, and because there are no fixed intakes you can start when you are ready rather than waiting for September. Your actual pace depends on how many hours a week you can commit and how quickly you complete each assignment.
Is a Level 4 diploma recognised?
Recognition depends on who awards it. The question to ask of any Level 4 diploma is: "Which awarding organisation issues the certificate, and is that organisation regulated?"
Qualifi, which awards the Level 4 diplomas delivered through UeCampus, is an awarding organisation recognised by Ofqual, the qualifications regulator in England. Being Ofqual-regulated means the awarding organisation has to meet Ofqual's conditions of recognition on governance, integrity, resources and expertise every year, and that the qualification sits on the regulated qualifications framework at a defined level and credit value. You can read more on the UeCampus Qualifi partner page.
Being regulated is different from being automatically accepted everywhere. Employers set their own requirements, and each university decides for itself how much credit it will recognise. Regulated status gives you a trustworthy, checkable qualification; it does not guarantee a particular job or a particular admissions outcome. Frequently asked questions
Is a Level 4 diploma the same as an HNC?
They are at the same level and are usually the same size (120 credits), but they are different qualifications. An HNC is a BTEC Higher National awarded by Pearson (or an SQA HNC in Scotland). A Level 4 diploma is awarded by a regulated awarding organisation such as Qualifi. Both normally lead on to a Level 5 qualification.
Can I go straight into the second year of a degree after a Level 4 diploma?
Sometimes. Qualifi's Level 4 Business Management specification states that learners may enter the second year of an undergraduate business or related degree, but every university decides for itself whether to accept the credits and which modules they map to. Confirm with the university's admissions team before you commit.
Do I need A levels to start a Level 4 diploma?
Usually a Level 3 qualification such as A levels or a Level 3 diploma is expected, but many awarding organisations also accept relevant work experience. Entry rules vary by programme, so check the specific diploma. UeCampus admissions advisors can confirm your eligibility before you apply.
How many credits is a Level 4 diploma?
Most Level 4 diplomas designed as the first stage of a degree route are 120 credits, which matches the first year of a UK bachelor's degree. Smaller Level 4 certificates and awards exist too, so check the credit value of the specific qualification.
Is a Level 4 diploma worth it if I want a full degree?
It can be, particularly if you want to study online, start at any time, and progress in stages. The Level 4 to Level 5 to top-up route reaches a full bachelor's degree while giving you a recognised qualification at each step. If you already know you will study three years full-time at one campus, a direct degree may be simpler.
What is the difference between Level 4 and Level 5?
Level 4 is equivalent in level to the first year of a degree, and Level 5 to the second year. A standard Level 5 diploma assumes you already hold a Level 4 qualification; an extended Level 5 diploma combines both stages. Read our guide to what a Level 5 diploma is for the full picture.
