What Is a Level 8 Diploma? Is It a Doctorate, and How Does It Compare with a DBA or PhD?
A Level 8 diploma sits at doctoral level on the UK framework but is not a doctorate. Learn what it is, who it suits, how the Qualifi Level 8 Diploma works, and how it compares with an online DBA or PhD.

"Level 8" is the top rung of the qualifications ladder in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is where the PhD sits, which is why people often assume that anything labelled Level 8 must be a doctorate. It is not. A Level 8 diploma is a regulated qualification pitched at doctoral level, but it is a diploma awarded by an awarding organisation, not a doctoral degree awarded by a university.
That distinction matters if you are a manager with a master's degree or MBA deciding what to study next. This guide explains what a Level 8 diploma is, what it is not, who it suits, how it compares with a DBA or PhD, and how the Level 8 route works at UeCampus.
What "Level 8" means
The UK government's list of qualification levels places four types of qualification at Level 8: doctorates (for example a PhD or DPhil), Level 8 awards, Level 8 certificates and Level 8 diplomas. All four are judged to involve the same level of intellectual demand: original thinking, handling complex and unpredictable problems, and advanced research skills. They differ enormously in size and in who awards them.
- A doctorate is a degree. It is awarded by a university or other institution with degree-awarding powers, normally takes three or more years, and is based on a substantial piece of original research examined by experts. It carries the title "Doctor".
- A Level 8 diploma is a regulated vocational qualification. It is awarded by an awarding organisation recognised by Ofqual, is much smaller than a doctorate, is assessed through structured units, and does not carry the title "Doctor".
If you have read our guide to what a Level 7 diploma is, the logic is the same one step up: a Level 7 diploma sits at master's level without being a master's degree, and a Level 8 diploma sits at doctoral level without being a doctorate. In Scotland the equivalent of Level 8 is SCQF Level 12, as explained in our article on SCQF levels.
Is a Level 8 diploma equivalent to a PhD or DBA?
No. It is at the same level, but it is not the same qualification, and it is not a degree. The honest way to describe it is "a doctoral-level diploma", or "a qualification at Level 8 of the Regulated Qualifications Framework". You should be cautious of any provider that calls a diploma a doctorate, or suggests you can use the title Dr after completing one.
What a Level 8 diploma is designed to do is prepare you for doctoral study. The awarding body Qualifi, for example, states that learners completing its Level 8 diploma are expected to progress to a doctorate, and that they can discuss a research proposal for a DBA, MPhil or PhD with a university partner. Whether a particular university accepts the diploma for entry, or for any exemption, is always that university's own decision.
Who a Level 8 diploma suits
A Level 8 diploma tends to suit three kinds of people:
- Senior managers who already hold a master's or MBA and want a structured, research-led programme on strategy and leadership that is shorter and more affordable than a full doctorate.
- People testing whether doctoral research is for them before committing three or more years to a DBA or PhD. The Research Methods unit and the dissertation-style project give a realistic taste of doctoral work.
- Practitioners who want the highest-level regulated UK qualification they can realistically complete alongside a full-time job, without needing the academic title.
It is less suitable if your goal is to be called "Doctor", to teach and supervise at a university, or to work in a role where a doctoral degree is a formal requirement. In those cases, go straight to a doctorate.
Example: the Qualifi Level 8 Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership
UeCampus delivers the Qualifi Level 8 Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership (Business Administration) fully online. Qualifi is a UK awarding organisation recognised by Ofqual, and this diploma is a regulated qualification at Level 8 (Ofqual qualification number 601/5362/3).
Key facts from the awarding body's specification:
- Credit value: 160 credits.
- Structure: eight units covering leadership qualities and practice, personal leadership development as a strategic manager, strategy development, planning and direction in cross-border and global organisations, strategic communication, culture and its impact on strategy, and research methods.
- Entry requirement: a Level 7 qualification or a master's degree.
- Intended progression: doctoral study (DBA, MPhil or PhD), subject to each university's admission decision.
At UeCampus the programme is centred on an independent research project in applied business administration, with supervision from experienced academics and practitioners. Current duration, fees and payment plans are shown on the programme page and can change, so always check there rather than relying on a blog post.

Doctorates you can study online with UeCampus
If a full doctorate is the right goal for you, UeCampus offers several online doctoral programmes with its partner institutions. Each page states the awarding institution, duration and entry requirements:
- Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), Walsh College USA, a fully online US doctorate with an accounting concentration.
- Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), focused on business strategy, research and leadership.
- PhD in Organizational Leadership
- PhD in Cyber Security
- PhD in Data Analytics
- PhD in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
Note that a doctorate from a US institution is a US degree and is not placed on the UK Regulated Qualifications Framework; if you need it recognised in a specific country, check with the relevant recognition body or employer there. Our guide to whether online degrees are recognised explains how to do that.
How to choose between the Level 8 diploma and a doctorate
Ask yourself four questions:
- Do I need the title? If yes, only a doctorate will do.
- How much time can I commit? A diploma can usually be completed in under a year alongside work; a doctorate is a multi-year commitment.
- Am I sure about research? If not, the diploma's research methods unit and applied project are a lower-risk way to find out.
- What is my next step after this? If it is doctoral study, choose the diploma knowing it is a stepping stone, and ask the target university in advance how it views the qualification.
Frequently asked questions
Can I call myself "Dr" after a Level 8 diploma?
No. The title Doctor comes with a doctoral degree awarded by a university. A Level 8 diploma is a regulated diploma, not a degree.
Is a Level 8 diploma higher than a master's?
It sits one level above a master's degree (Level 7) on the Regulated Qualifications Framework, and entry normally requires a Level 7 qualification or a master's. It is a smaller qualification than a doctorate, though.
Will a Level 8 diploma get me into a DBA or PhD?
It is designed as preparation for doctoral study and Qualifi describes doctoral entry as the intended progression, but admission is always the university's decision and depends on your research proposal, experience and the university's own rules. UeCampus does not promise entry to any specific doctorate.
Is a Level 8 diploma recognised by employers?
It is a regulated UK qualification at the highest level of the framework, awarded by an Ofqual-recognised awarding organisation, which employers can verify. How much weight any individual employer gives it depends on the role; it will not substitute for a doctorate where a doctorate is required.
What is the difference between a Level 8 diploma and a Level 7 diploma?
A Level 7 diploma is at master's level and is often used as a route into an MBA top-up. A Level 8 diploma is at doctoral level, requires a Level 7 qualification or master's for entry, and is used as a route towards doctoral study.
